Biography

By career, Jaakko Minkkinen was a border guard, but his amateur shooting skills earned him eight medals at the World Championships and saw him represent Finland at three editions of the Olympics, 1968 through 1976. In all three years, he competed in the small-bore rifle, three positions, 50 metres event, while in 1968 and 1976 he took part in the small-bore rifle, prone, 50 metres tournament. His best result, however, came when he competed in the free rifle, three-postions, 300 metres category at the 1972 Munich Games and placed sixth.

Minkkinen was more successful at the Worlds, but never won gold. In 1970 he took bronze in the 300 metres rifle prone both individually and with the team, while in 1974 he captured silver in the 50 metres small-bore rifle kneeling event. In 1978, he was a silver medalist with the 300 metres free rifle prone team, and a bronze medalist in four other team categories: 300 metres free rifle 3 positions, kneeling, and standing, and 300 metres standard rifle three positions.
