Huvi Tuiskunen was born in a village about 80 km north of Helsinki, to where he moved in 1898. Around 1920, he opened a sports and ammunition store in Lahti. He died in an incident while cleaning two pistols in his shop. One of the pistols inadvertently fired and the bullet penetrated Tuiskunen’s forehead above the eye. His grave in Lahti bears a commemorative plaque saying Finland’s first champion marksman. His summer villa designed by the famous architect Lars Sonck is still located in Luhtikylä.
Tuiskunen won the first organized Finnish shooting championship in 1907. He then competed in the free rifle, three positions event at both the 1908 London and 1912 Stockholm Olympics. He also contested the running deer, single shot event in 1912. Tuiskunen took part in many competitions and was considered as a “shooting maniac”. He became the first champion of the Häme district.
