A French rifle shooter, Jean-Pierre Amat remained at the top of the world rankings for over 20 years, with a rich palmarès that included Olympic, World, and European titles, as well as multiple national titles.
After a fourth place in air rifle at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, Amat won two medals at the 1996 Atlanta Games – gold in small-bore rifle 3-position and bronze in air rifle. He won individual and team World Championships between 1983 and 1994, also winning three silver and four bronze medals at the Worlds. At the European Championships, he won 15 medals, including five gold medals won between 1986 and 2000.
Retiring in 2002, Amat embarked on a managerial career in the Shooting Federation of the Savoie Region, and dedicated himself to shooting preparation of the French national biathlon team.
