Biography

Pierre Guy was born at the headquarters of the Guy distillery in Pontarlier in 1931 on the French-Swiss border. The distillery was founded in 1890 by his grandfather Armand, with Pierre eventually taking over the family business. He worked at the company until his retirement, passing on his knowledge to his son and daughter, who continued to run the business.

Guy was also an accomplished sportsman who competed in small-bore rifle shooting. In 1960 he represented France at the Roma Olympics where he finished 14th in the 50 metres prone event. Four years later he again competed at the Olympics, this time finishing 56th in the same event at the Tokyo Games. He also worked with the French biathlon team, helping the skiers to improve their shooting technique. Ahead of the 1968 Grenoble Olympics Guy was one of the torch bearers, bringing the flame to the commune of Arçon in December 1967. A further string to his sporting bow was cycling, with him founding the Pontarlier-Anis cycling team, with regular races taking place across the Haut-Doubs region.
