The bronze medal won by George Barnes at the 1908 Olympics was unquestionably the highlight of his shooting career. He appeared at Bisley several times at the turn of the century and, despite not winning the main prize, the King’s Trophy, he fared well in both 1908 and 1909. In the former year he was just two points behind the leader after the first round and, the following year, he reached the final 100. Barnes had earlier served with the 1st Middlesex Regiment.
