John Bashford was born in London and was a longtime resident of the Byfleet area. A member of the North London Rifle Club, he competed in two shooting events the 1908 Olympics held in London. His best result was in the running target, double shot event in which he placed ninth in a field of 15 competitors. Bashford was a wine merchant by profession, and also an active member of the Byfleet Rifle Club and Byfleet Cricket Club.
