James Bostock started his military career with the School of Musketry and worked his way up to become the chief instructor at the Small Arms School at Hythe, Kent, before attaining the rank of major with the King’s Own Light Yorkshire Infantry. He was subsequently awarded the OBE. Bostock was an excellent shot with both revolver and rifle, and was a member of the “Army Sixty” and “Army Twenty”, meaning he was at one time amongst the 60 best rifle shots in the British Army and 20 best revolver shots.
A regular competitor at the annual Bisley Meting, Brown’s best performance was in finishing joint second after a shoot-off in the 1911 “Graphic”, a service rifle event sponsored by the Graphic newspaper, one of the several “Newspaper” trophies at the Bisley Meeting each year.
