John Butt won two Olympic shooting medals, and when he won his second one in 1912, he was 61-years-of-age. He made his Olympic début at London in 1908 and won the team trap bronze medal with the Great Britain II team, and four years later added a silver in the same event.
Around the turn of the 20th century, Butt was a regular winner at the Inanimate Bird Shooting Association Championships, which were launched in 1893. A member of the St. George’s Gun Club in Neasden, he won the prestigious Land and Water Cup in 1895, and the Vice-President’s Trophy in 1898, after three shoot-offs. Butt finished third in the coveted Championship Cup in 1901 and the following year was the Association’s overall champion. The Championships also included an International Challenge and Butt was a member of the winning English team on many occasions.
Prior to his Olympic appearances, one of Butt’s finest moments was in captaining the Great Britain team in the Anglo-American clay-bird match at the Middlesex Gun Club, Hendon, in 1901. By profession, Butt was a cigar importer and London tobacconist.
