Arthur Fulton

At the time of his death in 1972, Arthur Fulton was regarded as the finest rifle shot the world had ever seen. He had an outstanding record at Bisley and appeared in a record 28 King’s/Queen’s Cups between 1905-62, and was the first person to win the gold medal three times, in 1912, 1926, 1931. He also won the silver medal three times (1914, 1927, 1931) and the Grand Aggregate silver cross twice. He represented Great Britain on 22 occasions and England on 44. He captained both Great Britain and England. He won two Olympic silver medals, at London in 1908 and Stockholm in 1912, both in the team military rifle event.

Fulton joined the Westminster Rifles shortly after the turn of the 20th century and in 1914 served as a machine gun sergeant with them in France, but his experience as a top-class sniper saw him “borrowed” by other regiments. During World War II, Fulton was a lieutenant in the Home Guard. He was awarded the MBE in the 1959 New Year’s Honours List for his services to shooting, and had previously been decorated with the DCM (Distinguished Conduct Medal).

Fulton’s father George was also a Queen’s Prize winner at Bisley (1888), and Arthur’s son Robin was also a winner of the coveted trophy in 1956. Arthur worked for Fulton & Son, the gunsmiths founded by his father in 1895. Arthur’s hobby was riding, and he was a member of the Chiddingfold Farmers Hunt, and also the Bisley Foxhounds.
