John Gough

Major John Gough was born in London, the only son of Cecil William McKinley Gough and Dorothy Eleanor Redding. A member of the British Army, Gough served various postings including in the Congo with the Queen’s Own Nigerian Regiment, Germany with the Royal Pioneer Corps, British Army of the Rhine (BAOR), and Parachute Regiment. A keen participant in Army shooting competitions, he captained the Army shooting team and was selected to represent his country at the 1976 Olympics in Montréal. There, he finished 21st in the 50 metres running target event.

Gough also won a silver medal in that same event at the World Shooting Championships in Seoul, and a bronze at the 1982 Commonwealth Games in Brisbane in the pairs 25 m centre fire pistol event. He continues to remain active in the sports shooting community, having most recently served as president of the British Sporting Rifle Club in 2019.
