An East Yorkshire farmer and butcher, Eric Grantham was the 1966 All-England clay pigeon shooting champion. He went to the 1968 Mexico Olympics having already competed in two world championships. Also in Olympic year, Grantham won the English Open Skeet Championship after a shoot-out
A former member and president of the East Yorkshire Gun Club, Grantham was still competing in the World Clay Pigeon Shooting Championships in 1982, one month before his 69th birthday. At the age of 75, while suffering from cancer, Grantham committed suicide by shooting himself in the head with a .22 calibre rifle.
