John Hall started shooting while working as a farmer. He subsequently joined a rifle club in Stafford before making his name with the City of Birmingham Rifle Club, and later became their honorary secretary. Hall started shooting at Championship events in 1937 and regularly competed at the Bisley meeting. The first of several memorable moments for Hall came in 1951 when he won the English Small Bore Rifle Championship, a title he regained in 1963 when he also had the honour of captaining the England small-bore rifle team. As a team man, he also helped the City of Birmingham club win many local and national honours in the 1950s and 1960s.
Hall took part in the 1962 World Shooting Championships at Cairo, and the 1964 Tokyo Olympics at the age of 57. His finest moment, however, came at the 1963 European Championships in Oslo when he won the silver medal in the 50 metres prone rifle event. Hall´s granddaughter Lucy was a trap shooter at 2024 Paris Olympics.
