Bob Hutton was the Irish Clay Bird Shooting champion for the fourth time in five years in 1908 and that same year was a member of the Great Britain II trap team at the 1908 London Olympics. He was the lowest scoring of the six-man team, yet still won a bronze medal, because they finished third out of the four competing nations. In the individual event, Hutton fared considerably better, and was the third-best scorer of the 12-man British squad, placing equal seventh overall.
Born and bred in Cavan, Ireland, Hutton was a member of the Cavan Gun Club, but regularly crossed the Irish Sea to compete in England in events at the likes of the Middlesex and Ealing Gun Clubs. In 1903 he won The Dougall Trophy, held in memory of James Dalziel Dougall, the “father” of British clay bird shooting. Hutton was a local Justice of the Peace (JP), and also a member of the Cavan County Council.
