Barrister William Lane-Joynt was educated initially at Windermere College before finishing his education at Bonn, in Germany. A major passion of his was stamp collecting, which he started during his time at Windermere. He was also an excellent revolver and rifle shot and was once the long-range champion of Ireland, and seven times the revolver champion. Lane-Joynt represented Ireland in the international Elcho Shield on 19 occasions. He won a silver medal with the Great Britain team in the running target single shot event at the 1908 London Olympics.
It was in the world of philately, however, that Lane-Joynt was held in such high esteem and in 1921 he became only the second Irishman to be elected to the Roll of Distinguished Philatelists at their Harrogate Congress. Sadly he was too ill to attend, and he died less than a month later. Lane-Joynt’s father, also a barrister called William, was the one-time mayor of Limerick and also the Lord Mayor, and Deputy Lieutenant, of Dublin.
