William McClure served as a sergeant in the Army Veterinary Corps before moving to the 16th Lancers, where he became a farrier quarter-master sergeant. He represented the Army regularly at the annual Bisley Meeting and in 1909, 1911, and 1913 and was chosen as part of the NRA’s prestigious Revolver Thirty squad (Revolver Twenty in 1909), from which the best team to represent the Regular Army in the Revolver Team Match at Bisley each year for the Whitehead Cup was selected. McClure was also a keen boxer and was a regular judge at army boxing contests. In 1914, after nearly 14 years in the British Army, McClure joined the instructional staff of the Australian Imperial Force.
