Canadian-born William Newton was a captain with the Honourable Artillery Company (HAC) at the time of his death in 1915. He was an excellent rifle and revolver shot and in his short time competing at the Bisley Meeting had an excellent record.
In 1911 Newton won the Secretary of State for War’s prize at Bisley, and had four times reached the final hundred in the King’s Prize. He was the champion revolver shot of his regiment and in 1913 won a bronze medal in the all-Comers’ Aggregate, a bronze cross in the Grand Aggregate, and a bronze jewel in the Service Rifle Championships. Also that year he won an NRA badge for his performance in the final of the King’s Prize.
Newton was selected as a reserve for the Great Britain team for their tour to Australia in the winter of 1914-15 but, because of the War, the tour was cancelled and, less than two months later, Newton lost his life on active service in France.
