Biography

Fighting for the Minato Ken Boxing Club, Sajiro Miyama won the All Japan Championships for two consecutive years in the featherweight class (1935-36). In the same division, he competed at the 1936 Berlin Olympics as a featherweight representative from Japan losing on points in the first round.

In the following year Miyama, who was a southpaw, turned professional. During his career, which lasted until 1950, he fought several fights against the famous Horiguchi brothers including five against Tsuneo “Piston” Horiguchi (1 – 1 – 3). Of his 32 professional bouts, he won 16 (including 5 knock-outs), lost 11 and had 5 draws, according to Japanese sources 37 bouts (18 – 12 – 7).
