John Pike was a clay bird specialist and regularly competed the National Clay Bird Championship at the turn of the 20th century. In 1901 he represented Great Britain in the match against the United States.
Pike was a member of the 1908 gold medal-winning Great Britain team at the London Olympics, when Pike’s score of 77 was bettered only by team-mate Alexander Maunder and the Canadian Walter Ewing. Pike, however, could only finish 12th in the individual event.
Pike worked as a travelling salesman for a printing company and in 1919 killed himself by shooting himself in the head at the study of his home in Moseley, Birmingham.
