When Charles Stewart won one individual and two team bronze medals at the 1912 Stockholm Olympics, he became only the second Briton to win three shooting medals at one Games after Ted Ranken, who won three silvers at London four years earlier.
At the 1912 Bisley Meeting, Stewart won the All-Comers Aggregate after a shoot-off against Charles Bayly of Dartford. At the same meeting, Stewart also carried off the runners-up prize in the Stock Exchange Aggregate.
Stewart was the son of a Royal navy paymaster and was just 11-years-of-age when his father died. The family lived on the Channel Island of Jersey, where Stewart attended Victoria College from 1891-95. He then went to the English mainland and studied at Stamford Grammar School before attending a technical school in Sunderland, where he started to learn his trade as an electrical and mechanical engineer. Stewart’s mother re-married Joseph de Mattos, who owned The Eddison Steam Rolling Company in Dorchester, where Stewart served his apprenticeship, before going on to become a senior member of the company.
