George Whitaker won trap team medals at the 1908 and 1912 Olympics, and came close to a third, with a fourth place finish, in 1920. His best individual performance was at the 1908 London Games when he finished 11th. The son of a London builder, Whitaker was a member of the National Gun Club and worked as an auctioneer and estate agent until living off personal means as a result of inheriting part of his father’s estate in 1893, which was the equivalent of around £5 million in 2020.
