Petra Horneber was a German rifle shooter who won the air rifle silver medal at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics. Four years later at Sydney, she placed ninth. Her small-bore rifle results were ninth (1996) and 17th (2000). At World Championships, she collected five gold medals (among them two individual golds in 1994 and 2002), one silver and one bronze. She was coached by her husband Ralf Horneber.
At the 2000 European Championships, Horneber added an individual bronze medal with the air rifle, and the following year became Team European Champion. In 2002, she was elected sports shooter of the year in Germany. Horneber won several German national titles and was awarded the Silver Bay Leaf, Germany’s highest sports award. In 1991 and 1993, she also won two gold medals at the Crossbow World Championships.
Horneber later turned to coaching and worked as a secretary with the Bavarian Sports Shooting Association.
