Although German sports shooter Hubert Bichler reached the final of the small-bore rifle, prone, 50 metres, with the best score in the preliminary round (598) at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, he failed to win a medal and finished an unfortunate fourth. In the three-positions event he missed the final completely. At World Championships, Bichler won two gold, one silver and two bronze medals in different rifle and crossbow events. Nationally, he added 23 titles, also in different events.
By profession, Bichler was a policeman. However, he later turned to coaching including, among others, Sonja Pfeilschifter. He was also chief national rifle coach in Austria.
