Biography

Light-middleweight boxer Chiharu Ogiwara fought in the ring at high school and university before winning his first of eight consecutive All Japan Championship titles in 1979. In 1983 Ogiwara had won the Asian Championship, which earned him a spot on Japan’s Olympic team. At the 1984 Los Angeles Games he won his opening bout against Mario Centeno before losing to Rod Douglas. Two years later he won silver at the Asian Games in Seoul, with him retiring shortly afterwards. Ogiwara then worked as a boxing instructor before becoming a referee and coach at Keio University.
