German small-bore rifle shooter Christian Klees surprisingly won the 50 metres prone gold medal at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics. He was therefore awarded the Silver Bay Leaf, Germany’s highest sports award. He also finished 37th in the three positions event that year. In 1995, he won a team gold at the European Championships. Klees also earned two national titles, and a bronze medal at the 1994 World Championships. He later turned to coaching at his home club Eutiner Sportschützen.
