Ioannis Fragkoudis

Ioannis Fragkiskos, who took part in four of the five Olympic shooting events in 1896. He ranked 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th, winning the free pistol event in the absence of the American Paine brothers, who dominated the two other pistol competitions. Fragkiskos hailed from Limassol (Lemesos) on Cyprus, which was under British control at the time, but was born in Zakynthos, where his father worked as a consul at the time. He graduated from the military academy in 1885, and worked his way up the ranks of the Greek army, being a captain at the time of the 1896 Olympics. After the Greco-Turkish war of 1897, he had become a colonel, and a friend of King Georgios. Frangoudis was present when the king was shot by an assassin in Thessaloniki in 1913.
