László Balogh competed in the colours of Budapesti Honvéd, starting in 1972. In 1981, he set a new national record in rapid-fire pistol with 599. In 1984 Balogh became a member of the Hungarian national shooting team.
In 1988, Balogh competed at the Seoul Olympics, just missing the final, as he finished 9th. In 1988, he was second in the World Rankings. He also won a silver medal in the team competition at the 1990 World Championships, and was a multiple national champion in different pistol disciplines.
In addition to his sports shooting career, Balogh was also a passionate motorcyclist and became President of the Zalka Máté Motorosklub. In 1990, he also began a career as a sports manager in motorsports. After completing his career as a sports shooter, Balogh served as Secretary General of the Hungarian Sports Shooting Association until 2015. He died at the age of 61 in a motorcycle accident.
