Szilárd Kun

Szilárd Kun was a sports shooter for Ganz Villany from 1949, Budapesti Bástya from 1951, Budapesti Dózsa from 1953, and Újpesti Dózsa from 1957. Kun competed in the rapid-fire pistol category, winning nine individual and 17 team championship titles during his more than three-decade career. He was also part of the Hungarian national team from 1952 to 1972, competing at five Olympics. His best result was in Helsinki in 1952, where at the age of 17, he took second place after a second shoot-off with the two-time Olympic champion and his master Károly Takács.

Kun competed at four more Olympics and finished sixth in 1956 and fifth in 1964. He finished fourth in the team at the 1962 World Championships in Cairo. In 1965 he won the individual European Championship title in Bucharest, along with the bronze medal in the team. He finished fourth in the team at the 1959 European Championship in Milano. After the 1972 München Games, he retired from the national team before ending his competitive sports career two years later.

During his sports career Kun worked as a police officer. Due to his constant nervousness, he developed a duodenal ulcer, resulting in an early retirement in 1981 at the age of 46. During his sports career, he graduated from the school of hospitality management and ran a wine bar until his death.

His brother, Ferenc, was also an Olympic shooter.
