In World War I, Mészöly was captured in the Great Russian offensive of July 1916. He escaped, but was re-captured and moved 5,000 km further away, to Chabarowsk, the most eastern border of Siberia. During the Bolshevik Revolution, he escaped, traveling the 11,000 km on foot, and returned home to his family in July 1918. In November of that same year he organized the National Guard in Eger at the outbreak of the revolution. He was murdered on 3 May 1919 and sacked by a Bolshevik soldier.
