Imre Simkó did several different sports during his high school years, including wrestling, then fencing, and modern pentathlon, but after high school he committed himself to shooting. From 1957 to 1967 he competed for Egyesített Tiszti Iskola, while from 1961 to 1963 he was with Bp. Honvéd. His first and biggest success happened at the 1959 European Championships, where he won the individual title for youths and won two gold medals as a member of the Hungarian team in the seniors. He won gold at the Warsaw Pact Army Championships.
On the national level Simkó was a 33-time Hungarian champion and held numerous records. He competed at the Roma (1960) and Tokyo (1964) Olympics but fell short of expectations and did not win a medal. During his sports career, Simkó graduated at the Teacher Training College, the Military Academy, and at the College of Physical Education as a shooting coach.
As a professional soldier, Simkó first taught at the Academy, then from 1979 to 1989 taught shooting at the Hungarian Anti-Terrorism Agency. He retired in 1989 but wanted new adventures and moved to the United States, where he lived in California since 1990, working as a shooting trainer for police
