Dezső Zirthy’s father worked in the police department and retired as a detective inspector. Dezső continued the family tradition in 1925 after graduation and military service, first as an assistant inspector, then from 1930 as a police inspector.
He competed in a shooting competition for the first time in 1934 at a national shooting competition for police officers, where he finished fourth in pistol shooting. After barely two years of competition, he was selected for the team traveling to the Berlin Olympics and started in the rapid-fire sports pistol category. Due to the lack of competition routine, however, he competed nervously and did not reach the final. Later, he started only shooting in competitions for police.
