Bertalan Zsótér graduated from the Ludovika Military Academy in 1928. From 1931 to 1944, he was a sports shooter of the Budai Honvédtiszti Sport Egyesület (HOTIS). Between 1932 and 1934, he won no less than nine individual Hungarian championships in pistol and rifle competitions. In addition, he won nineteen team championships between 1931 and 1938. He was the member of the Hungarian national team from 1935 to 1938.
At the 1936 Berlin Olympics he finished in 10th place in the free pistol. In 1935, he was a member of the world champion rifle team and finished fourth in the individual event. In 1937, he was a member of the fourth-place rifle prone team at the World Championship.
As a professional soldier he served in the Honvéd Infantry Regiment until 1938. He obtained a diploma in mechanical engineering at the University of Technology in 1938. From 1938 to 1944, he worked at the Institute of Military Technology. He was taken prisoner of war in 1945. After the Second World War, he became disillusioned, so he changed his career and became an Evangelical priest.
