West Bengal resident Souren Chowdhury of South Calcutta Rifle Club was, alongside Dr. Harijar Banerjee, one of the first two sports shooters to represent India at the Olympics, at Helsinki in 1952. There, he competed in the small bore rifle competition alongside Banerjee, finishing 39th in a field of 58 competitors. Earlier in April of that same year, Chowdhury was crowned the All-India and All-Bengal champion at the All-India Rifle Shooting Competition held at the Tollygunge Police Range, where he won all of the individual events. After his Olympic appearance, he continued to compete in national competitions in India throughout the 1950s.
