Bruno Giacconi was an Italian military officer, sports shooter, and politician. He successfully attended the prestigious Military Academy of Modena and competed as an officer in World War I, distinguishing himself on several occasions. At the end of the war, he was recognized for his valiant military actions and was awarded the silver medal for military valour.
In 1919 Giacconi was in Fiume (now Rijeka, Croatia) with his full battalion participating in the Ronchi march alongside the poet Gabriele D’Annunzio. In the final phase of the Fiume adventure, he held the position of President of the Military Council of the Carnaro Regency.
After the Fiume affair, he would remain a faithful companion of the poet. As punishment for having participated in D’Annunzio’s enterprise he was placed in confinement in the city of Sondrio, where he married the noble Adriana Sertoli and later held the office of President of the Province. In 1936 he competed at the Berlin Olympics in rapid-fire pistol, finishing 11th overall. In 2000 the writer Luciano Egidi dedicated a book to him entitled Un Osimano a Fiume: Bruno Giacconi.
