Angelo Scalzone was an Italian trap shooter, and the third Italian winner of an Olympic trap gold medal after Galliano Rossini (1956) and Ennio Mattarelli (1964). Scalzone achieved this success at München in 1972 by beating 56 other competitors, including his team-mate Silvano Basagni, who took the broze medal. Scalzone had an exceptional competition, and set new Olympic and World records with 199/200. His only miss in the final was due to a sudden gust of wind that deflected the target, but he maintained his coolness, especially in the last 25 shots.
Scalzone was a member of the Italian team that won the world title at Bologna in 1967, and four European titles (Lisbon 1965, Lahti 1966, Torino 1973, and Vienna 1975). His son Roberto also won three team gold medals. Angelo Scalzone passed away at the age of just 56 as a result of a liver tumour.
