Ferdinand Buchanan was a career officer of the South African Infantry. In World War I, he received the Military Cross in 1917. In World War II, he served as commanding officer of the 9th and later the 2nd South African Brigade, fighting against the Italian Army in Ethiopia. Between these assignments, Buchanan was Deputy Director of Infantry Training. His highest rank was Brigadier General.
