Johan Ekman was born in the Uppsala province but spent most of his life in Stockholm. There he had a business as a pawnbroker in 1880. Later his occupation was given as “ball manufacturer”, probably referring to marbles as children’s toys. He was married to Inga Kajsa; together they had three daughters and three sons. At the 1912 Olympic Games he competed in the running target and clay pigeon event, with his best result placing fourth in the trap team event.
