Slovenian Karlo Umek mastered his shooting skills as a member of the Yugoslav Partisans during World War II and transferred them to the realm of sports shortly following the end of the conflict. By 1958 he had won two national titles and was invited to participate in that year’s edition of the ISSF World Shooting Championships in Moscow as a representative of Yugoslavia, where he did not receive any medals but nonetheless set a national record in the 50 Metre Pistol competition. Two years later, at the 1960 Summer Olympics, he placed 22nd in a field of 67 competitors in the same event. In 2005 he was made an honorary member of the shooting club in Brežice, Slovenia. Outside of shooting he was also an active cyclist who continued to ride past the age of 90 and, at the time of his death in September 2010, he was the oldest living Slovenian Olympian.
