When Frances Bult was 18-years-old she was already one of the fastest swimmers in Australia, with her setting multiple state and national records. Bult was the Victorian freestyle champion in the 50, 100, 220, and 440 yards, which was made even more remarkable by the fact that the state only had one 25-yard pool in use for winter training. She was selected to compete at the 1932 Los Angeles Olympics where she finished fifth in the final of the 100 metres freestyle, in addition to swimming in the 400 metres freestyle. Bult retired from competitive swimming in 1935, but later competed in the master category where she won multiple titles and set several records.
