Anna McVann competed at her first South Australian state championship when she was only 12-years-old, and she swam at the Australian Championships when she turned 14. During her career she set 120 different South Australian records, over a variety of events. McVann swam at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, making the finals of all four events she swam, but just missed the podium with fourth-place finishes in the 800 freestyle and 4x100 freestyle relay.
McVann competed at the 1985 Pan Pacific Meet, and swam at the 1986 Commonwealth Games. She then retired to study physiotherapy, although she returned in 1990 and received a scholarship to train at the Australian Institute of Sport. She eventually retired from swimming competition after failing to make the 1992 Australian Olympic team.
