Rex Aubrey

Rex Aubrey was a freestyle sprinter who placed sixth in the 100 free at the 1952 Helsinki Olympics. He also competed at the 1954 British Empire and Commonwealth Games, winning a gold medal in the 4x220 yd freestyle relay and a bronze medal in the 110 yard freestyle. Aubrey won the New South Wales and Australian Championships at 110 yards and 220 yards freestyle in January 1952. Aubrey was the first Olympian from the town of Parkes, New South Wales, and the town honored him by naming a street after him, Rex Aubrey Place.

Aubrey attended college in the United States where he swam for Yale. At Yale he won NCAA titles in both the 50 and 100 yard freestyles. He graduated from Yale in 1958 with a political science degree and then was named athletic director at the Omaha Athletic Club. In 1962 he was named athletic director at the Detroit Athletic Club, staying there for 40 years until he retired in 2002. During that time he also worked as a club manager at the Oakland Hills Country Club, retiring from there in 2001.
