Biography

Murray Garretty was a distance freestyler who just missed winning a medal in the 1,500 metres at the 1956 Melbourne Olympics, placing fourth. He did take home a gold medal, however, from the 4x200 freestyle relay. Garretty later took up the butterfly, employing an unusual triple dolphin kick. He was originally from Queensland and his family then moved to Sydney. Garretty eventually moved to South Australia to be coached by Harry Gallagher prior to the 1956 Olympics. In 1957 Garretty won the Australian Open Surf Race Championship at Bondi Beach, while representing the Henley Surf Life Saving Club, making him the first South Australian to win that title.
