Born in Scotland in 1946 Angus Edghill was a pioneer in the sport of swimming in Barbados. Edghill studied engineering at the University of Manitoba in Canada, representing the Manitoba Bisons swimming team. In 1968 Barbados made its début at the Olympics, sending a delegation of nine male athletes to the Mexico City Games. Edghill was the nation’s sole representative in the pool, with him swimming in both the 100 and 200 metres freestyle, finishing 47th and 55th, respectively. Despite the poor results at the Olympics, he went on to become one of the best swimmers for the island nation, becoming a national champion in both events. Edghill continued swimming throughout his life, becoming a world record holder in multiple masters’ events.
Edghill worked as a civil engineer, which saw his involvement in multiple projects in Barbados, including the construction the Barbados Aquatic Centre, which featured a 50 metre Olympic-size swimming pool. He later worked as the managing director of a construction company that built the US Embassy in Bridgetown.
