Fernando Pavan was primarily a volleyball player, but as that was not an Olympic sport during his competitive days, he trained in swimming and made Brazil’s delegation to the 1952 Helsinki Games. There, he competed in the 100 metres backstroke, where he was eliminated in the semi-finals. He had previously competed in this event at the 1951 Pan American Games, where he placed sixth. This was the pinnacle of his swimming career, but he continued to compete in volleyball into the 1960s and later coached the sport and worked in administrative capacities. He remained athletically active through golf into his 80s.
