Charlie Chen was from Xiamen and lived in Hong Kong where he attended the St. Joseph’s College. He won the 50 and 100 m freestyle at the 4th National Games in 1930 in Hangzhou and repeated this accomplishment at the successive 1933 and 1935 National Games. Chen was selected for the Chinese team at the 1927 and 1930 Far Eastern Games and the 1936 Berlin Olympics.
In the 1936 Hong Kong movie “The Queen of the Sea”, he is credited as swimming consultant. Chen graduated from the Guangdong aviation academy and went on to became a pilot of provincial warlord air force of General Chen Jitang. In 1936, he changed sides and joined the Republic of China Air Force.
