Kaija Mäkelä was the Finnish national champion in the 200 metres breaststroke from 1949 through 1954 and represented her country in that event at the 1952 Helsinki Olympics, where she placed 16th. She also competed in that discipline at the 1954 European Championships. Domestically, she was also the 100 metres butterfly champion from 1951 through 1953, captured six more gold medals in relay events from 1948 through 1954, and set national records in the 100, 200 and 500 metres breaststroke events, as well as in the 100 metres butterfly. She also captured three bronze medals at the Nordic championships between 1949 and 1953.
