Robert Christophe was a backstroker who won 30 French titles. His best international efforts came in winning European titles in the 100 back at Budapest in 1958 and Leipzig in 1962, adding a 1962 gold medal in the 4x100 freestyle relay in world record time. He competed at three Olympics (1956, 1960, 1964), but did not win a medal, placing fourth in the 100 back in both 1956 and 1960. Christophe set 26 French records and five European records and led the 1959 world list in the 100 backstroke. He was also champion in the 100 back at the 1959 Mediterranean Games and the 1961 Jeux de l’amitié. He later became a coach and President of the Cercle des Nageurs Avignonnais.
