Despite being born in Portsmouth, Linda Amos moved to the Bristol area when she was 17 and swam for the Bristol Central swimming club, having previously made a name for herself at the Portsmouth Northsea club. Although she never won an individual ASA title, Amos enjoyed five podium finishes, four of them in the 110 yards freestyle, each time behind winner Diana Wilkinson, in 1961-64. Amos was also third in the 220 free in 1964.
Internationally, Amos competed at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics but failed to qualify for the 100 metres final after finishing sixth in her heat behind the eventual gold medallist Dawn Fraser. Amos won a silver medal with the Great Britain 4x100 relay squad at the 1962 European Championships at Leipzig. The British quartet also briefly held the European record. Later that same year, Amos won a relay bronze at the Perth (Australia) British Empire and Commonwealth Games.
Amos married fellow swimmer and Bristol Central SC member Ivan Skirton in 1965, and they were both successful Masters winners in the 1980s and 90s. A former office clerk, Amos later became a swimming instructor and worked at the famous Millfield School.
