Biography

Although born in Glasgow, freestyle swimmer Fiona Kellock lived in India in the mid-1950s after her father took a job there. Upon returning to Britain, the family lived in the north-east of England, and Kellock attended Newcastle Central High School and became a city swimming champion at various disciplines.

After helping Northumberland Swimming Club to retain the Northumberland and Durham junior team title in 1959, she moved with the family to Scotland and joined the Falkirk Otter club, after which she went on to win regional and Scottish national titles, in addition to breaking many Scottish records. There was uproar when Kellock was left out of the Scottish team for the 1966 British Empire and Commonwealth Games at Kingston, Jamaica, but a campaign to have her included was successful and she was a member of the 4x110 yards medley relay team that just missed out on a medal in fourth place.

Kellock enjoyed a special moment at the World Student Games (Summer Universiade) at Tokyo in 1967 when, along with Di Harris, Louise Campbell and Darryl Jones, she won the 4x100 metres medley silver medal behind the strong American quartet. The following year, after coming second to Alex Jackson in the ASA 110 yards final, Kellock was one of two Scottish swimmers to be selected for the Olympics but, like compatriot Bobby McGregor, failed to win a medal. Despite that, Kellock was named the 1968 Scottish Swimmer of the Year. Kellock retired shortly afterwards, and after marrying Roy Cockburn in 1970 they made their home in Canada, where she died at the age of 55 in 2003.
