Having performed well in the Southern Olympic Trial, Helen Varcoe was selected for the 1932 Great Britain Olympic 4x100 metres freestyle relay squad. Along with Valerie Davies, Joyce Cooper and Edna Hughes, the quartet captured the bronze medal. Varcoe’s only ASA podium came the following year, when she finished third behind Sheila Calderhead and Edna Hughes in the 100 free at Leyton. Having won Surrey county titles, Varcoe married master watchmaker Frederick Nichols in 1934 and moved to Penzance, where she added to her Surrey titles by winning the 200 yards freestyle at the 1935 Cornwall County Championship.
