Scottish butterfly swimmer Ian Blyth of the Dundee Whitehall SC finished third in the ASA 220 yards championship behind fellow Scot Ian Black, and Graham Symonds, in both 1958 and 1959, before winning the title by the narrowest of margins from Symonds in 1960. That year, the 17-year-old Blyth represented Great Britain in the 200 metres at the Roma Olympics but was eliminated in the semi-final after finishing last in a heat won by the eventual gold medallist Mike Troy of the USA. In 1961, with Ian Black missing the championships, Blyth eventually won his first Scottish title, the 220 yards butterfly.
A Dundee postman, Blyth started swimming at the age of 15 and was a British junior champion who went on to represent Great Britain on 13 occasions. He announced his retirement from competitive swimming on his 21st birthday in 1963.
